Submission Realization

Was reading submissions this weekend for Splinter Generation and came to a realization:

Man, this generation is lonely. Story after story about lonely people looking for connections. Is there a reason for that? Maybe every generation feels cut off. But I can't help but think there's so much more to be cut off from nowadays. Like, maybe loneliness increases the more you're aware of how many people you don't know. One of six point seven billion.

I'm going to go pour myself a drink and think about that for awhile.

  1. The Lost Generation seemed pretty lonely to me.

I think you're on to something, but maybe pointing it in the wrong direction. We're lonely not because we're aware of all the people we don't know, but because we're aware of all the people we do know--we have known. We have unprecedented abilities for communication, for relation to others, but by and large all we use them for is to throw ourselves out into the ether.

  2. Maybe so. Interestingly, the Lost Generation was also living in a world that was shrinking dramatically and where communication was becoming increasingly easy. Maybe we expect such advancements to lift us up out of our loneliness -- and when they don't, the feeling takes on even greater weight.
